DESIGN: Tapio Wirkkala in 1968
MATERIAL: Mouth-blown glass
SIZE: 2.5"d - In 1968, Tapio Wirkkala was inspired by the melting ice in his native Lapland in his design of the Iittala Ultima Thule Centerpiece Bowl/Platter. He carved his envisioned pattern into a graphic mold. That original pattern morphed, however, as the glass gradually burned its way through the wood mold. The results then, as now, were highly distinctive and one of the kind.
From humble beginnings as a small glass factory, today Iittala offers a wide variety of modern Scandinavian housewares that demonstrate the company's commitment to design quality and product longevity. Based in Helsinki, Finland, Iittala continues to make cookware, tableware and other home accessories that are both lovely and useful, based primarily on the forward-thinking philosophies of design icons Kaj Franck and Alvar Aalto.
